Past, Present & Future

At MRISE, we remain steadfast in our commitment to your growth, connection, and overall success. As we venture into the future, we are excited to embark on this transformative journey with you: Empowering Dreams, Building Futures.
Past

MRISE has been dedicated to supporting and educating migrants and refugees embarking on the challenging journey of entrepreneurship. Our commitment to helping you navigate and succeed in the unfamiliar business landscape has been unwavering. Through Fusion Meetings & Events' generous funding, we have provided invaluable resources, mentorship, and education, empowering individuals to not only adapt but also thrive in their new environments.

Present

As we reflect on our past achievements, we are proud to acknowledge the instrumental role played by you in shaping the present trajectory of MRISE. Your requests & the increasing demand for our services have prompted us to meticulously review and adapt to your evolving needs. At present, we are diligently working on a new programme that goes beyond our initial offerings, ensuring that we continue to be at the forefront of supporting you on your migration journey.

Future...

Looking ahead, we are excited to share our vision for the future. In early 2024, MRISE is set to launch an innovative program: the English Language Empowerment & Achievement Programme (E-LEAP). This innovative initiative is designed specifically for individuals whose second language is English, aiming to accelerate your success in a new country/new world. E-LEAP is not just a language program; it is a comprehensive empowerment initiative crafted to equip migrants to not only survive but thrive.

Co-Founders : Our Story

Becky: I was dropped off in NZ with zero English at the age of 13. For the first time in my life I thought I would starve to death because I couldn't speak.  While you can learn to get food without words, I realised crossing the migrant-local barrier needs English language, but you also need so much more.  Collecting building blocks from mentors along the way, despite the challenges, I ended up working for Helen Clark, the Prime Minister, in communications. The transformation from a world where everyone said second language speakers couldn’t succeed to standing tall in the epicenter of New Zealand's political scene put me on a mission to ensure other migrants don’t just survive, they thrive. There I met a kindred spirit, Shilinka Smith.

Shilinka: Growing up in NZ with mixed ethnicities but looking like the majority culture means I regularly see both the opportunities that workplaces miss out on by not being open to diversity.  I also see the miscommunication that happens in cross-cultural spaces if people are not used to it.  Becasue of this experience, I have always studied and chosen work in diverse environments, whether at Oxford, INSEAD, AUT or Victoria  University of Wellington, whether in Maori Development,  Multicultural Affairs, Pacific Island Affairs or working to enhance organisational performance at the Public Service Commission, NZ Treasury or Office of the Auditor General.   After meeting Becky, we knew we had  to use our diverse skills to try new ways to ensure everyone benefits from all of our diversity.

THRIVING

Stronger Together

Becky and Shilinka constantly challenge themselves to 'be the change they want to see' (Gandhi).  So, in 2008 they began experimenting with different ways to change the diversity and innovation world.  Each new experiment helps specific people achieve their goals and propels learning about the challenges of diversity forward.  MRISE (2017) is the current Experiential Learning Centre for new experiments. Its success is a testament to the power of diversity as a strength, where difference springboards innovation.  E-LEAP is the latest programme helping Migrants (for whom English is a second language) cross the local-migant barrier to know what is going on, be welcomed into conversations and thrive in their new world. E-LEAP brings together all the successes, challenges, heartache & triumphs since 2008 to catapult migrants into designing and achieveng their own success paths.
